087. Imagined penance for imagined sin.

The wall collapses, and in the split second between when it does and when its weight piles on top of her, Rachel recognizes what's about to happen and for an instant, feels grateful.

When she wakes up in a hospital bed and told she may never walk again, she grieves but still feels grateful. Tells her mentee, "Perhaps it was for the best."

There'll be no need to tell the Diamonds how she almost abandoned them. No need to tarnish her reputation as Queen or that of her predecessor and mentor's. No need to make her people lose faith in the ones meant to keep them standing tall.

In light of all that-- in the interest of keeping her Diamonds standing tall and untarnished and knowing they were loved; in the interest of hiding the sin of her almost-dishonourable departure-- never standing again seems, to Rachel, to be a worthy penance.
