[FIC] An Inch is a Most Precious Thing [EDCHEL]
Prompt: Edgar/Rachel, an inch is a most precious thing, 8
Song: I'm Not Who I Was- Brandon Heath
Summary: It's only one beautiful night, but it's the only night it doesn't hurt so much to look at him.
One year, they somehow find themselves alone at the Diamonds Winter Festival. For once, they don't try to avoid each other, instead standing quietly and gazing at the stars as though they are years in the past and together once more.
At one point, Edgar bumps elbows with her carelessly and asks, "Was it worth it?"
She has bested the men of her past who would have her fail. She is well-loved by her Queen. She is a clear replacement for the ailing Ace. It's everything she ever wanted.
"Most days," she replies, before countering with a question of her own, "Are you happy?"
He is a proud Ten at last. He is married to a friend almost as old and as dear as she was, once. He is sure to Challenge for King any day now. It's everything he ever wanted.
He replies, "Most days," and for an instant she sees that glimpse of a boy she used to love. For once, though, it doesn't sting to see him, and she can't help but think of that old saying about loving things and letting them go and wonders if the fact that they don't need each other anymore was a sign of their love's strength or its weakness.
This time when they part ways, neither of them need nor want to look back, and (if only for an instant) she has her answer.
